Operating Hours

The park is open year-round. Visitor centers are open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours spring through fall. Visitor centers are closed December 25th and January 1st. Many roads and trails are impassable during winter months.

Travel in the Canyonlands area generally requires a car. While transit to nearby cities may be arranged, there is no public transportation to the park. Shuttle services and commercial tours may be available to some destinations.

PLANE - Commercial airlines serve Grand Junction, CO and Salt Lake City, UT. By car, these cities are at least 2 and 4 hours (respectively) away from the closest park entrance (Island in the Sky).

CAR - There are two paved entrances into Canyonlands: Highway 313 leads to the Island in the Sky District and is 10 miles north of Moab; Highway 211 leads to the Needles District and is 40 miles south of Moab. The roads to the Maze District are graded dirt and are impassable when wet.

BUS - Greyhound travels along Interstate 70, making stops at Grand Junction, CO and Green River, UT. Commercial van services operate between Moab and Salt Lake City as well as Grand Junction.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION - There is no public transportation to Canyonlands.

The temperate (and most popular) seasons are spring (April through May) and fall (mid-September through October), when daytime highs average 60 to 80 F and lows average 30 to 50 F.

Winters are cold, with highs averaging 30 to 50 F, and lows averaging 0 to 20 F. Though large snowfalls are uncommon (except in nearby mountains), even small amounts of snow or ice can make local trails and roads

For visitors with hearing impairments, a variety of publications may be obtained at the district visitor centers. Wayside exhibits with illustrations and text on natural and cultural features are situated throughout the Island in the Sky and Needles Districts and in the visitor centers.

As part of the Recreation Fee Demonstration Program instituted by Congress in 1996, entrance fees are collected year round. 80% of all fees collected now stay in the park. In Canyonlands these new fees will allow campgrounds site to be increased, improve accessibility at park facilities, and improve park wayside exhibits, trail maintenance, and revegetation efforts.

$ 5.00 Four Wheel Drive Use Required for 4WD day trips into Horse/Salt and Lavender Canyons in the Needles. Valid for one day.
