While The Strip - which is mainly in
Paradise
- attracts most of the attention to Las
Vegas, the city's downtown is still a
lively area full of casinos, hotels, and
entertainment. For those who want to enjoy
the nostalgia of Las Vegas this is one
of the best places to do it since this
was the main attraction and district of
the city before The Strip.
The
highlight of downtown Las Vegas is Fremont
Street . It has something that Las
Vegas Blvd. (a portion of which is known
as "The Strip") does not - overhead
light shows on a canopy that is almost
as long as five football fields. This
light show takes place 90 feet above the
street and dazzles the pedestrians beneath.
Light shows are presented beginning at
7:00 pm at the top of every hour until
Midnight; there are eight different shows
that are cycled through. The six minute
light shows complement ten casinos, 60
plus restaurants, and numerous bars and
lounges. When the light shows are not
showing, music with concert quality sound
is pumped onto the pedestrian mall. If
that is not enough, there are live musical
and performing acts to further excite
the crowd on the pedestrian mall. Shoppers
will also enjoy this "glitter gulch"
as there are many shops on carts and kiosks
that sell a wide range of wares. Click

on Fremont Street. Nathan Badera
If the overhead light show doesn't convince
you that downtown is trying to match the
over-the-top attitude of The Strip, visit
the Upper Deck restaurant in the Las
Vegas Club. Here you will find the
Big Daddy Barrick Burger - a nine pounder.
This $49.99 burger includes a 12 inch
bun, half a head of lettuce, two tomatoes,
two onions, four pickles, the standard
condiments (mayo and mustard), and 12
slices of American cheese. While it makes
an interesting meal for a big group to
share, it is not recommended for Atkins
addicts, vegetarians, vegetable haters,
and those who hate large quantities of
mustard or mayo. We here at TravelWest
highly recommend that you do not
try to get a Big Daddy Barrick Burger
for free by eating it all by yourself
within 24 hours - you could die.
If it is this burger that kills you, you
won't die happy. You can die happy if
you don't eat it. A nine pound burger
only
in Las Vegas, not at your local Costco,
Sam's Club, or other big box mart store.
