Entertainment

Utah Shakespearean Festival

The Tony-award winning Utah Shakespearean Festival is consistently lauded as one of the finest professional theater events in the U.S. It produces Shakespearean plays and contemporary pieces, ranging from dramas such as Ernest Thompson’s “On Golden Pond” to comedies such as Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore.” The Festival stages all of its Shakespeare productions at the Adams Memorial Shakespeare Theatre, a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The indoor Randall L. Jones Theatre hosts the contemporary plays. Held in the courtyard south of the Adams Theatre, the Green Show, which takes place an hour before the Shakespearean productions start, is a good primer to Shakespeare’s works. The free production features the music and dance of the Elizabethan period. The festival also includes backstage tours, seminars, and The Royal Feaste, a dinner theatre production where guests eat in the style of renaissance noblemen.

Southern Utah University

The cultural heart of Cedar City, Southern Utah University hosts many notable events every year, including the Utah Shakespearean Festival, the Utah Summer Games, student theatrical productions, seminars, conferences, and NCAA Division I sporting events. The Adams Theatre and Randall L. Jones Theatre in the northeast corner of campus host the Shakespearean Festival’s plays. The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, located next to Old Main, displays the work of students and faculty as well as regional and national traveling exhibitions. The Centrum is home to the university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and women’s gymnastics squad. The arena also hosts concerts and other special events. The Greek-themed Eccles Coliseum, located on the west end of campus, is the home of the university’s football and track teams. It also hosts the opening and closing ceremonies of the Utah Summer Games. An Olympic Legacy Monument at the south end of the stadium, displaying the logo of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games, boasts an eight-foot wide cauldron lit during the Summer Games’ opening ceremonies. Another campus attraction, located just south of the coliseum, is the Parterre Gardens, which display native flowers and plants grown at the university’s science center.
